"The government's new chief procurement officer is to take on additional responsibility in an attempt to make more Whitehall business-like, the Cabinet Office has confirmed.
Bill Crothers is to take over as the central government procurement chief when John Collington stands down at the end of July. But Crothers will also head a new Commercial Procurement and Relationships Directorate which will merge the currently separate procurement and commercial functions.
Crothers will move from his current post as executive director of commercial relationships, a role which has seen him conduct contract renegotiations with the government's biggest suppliers. Instigated by Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude, this move was designed to get better deals for the taxpayer and save hundreds of millions of pounds..."
