Transport for Wales will soon open prequalification for the construction of the £700m South Wales Metro transport project.
The second phase in the Metro scheme was officially confirmed in July of 2015 and aims to improve public transport across Cardiff and the surrounding areas. Consultancy firm Mott MacDonald has been appointed to provide advice during the procurement process, which is due to begin in the next few months.
The majority of the funding for this project has been provided by the UK and Welsh Government, with a further £100m expected from the European Union’s Regional Development Fund.
Works are due to commence on this project in 2019 and will aim to be completed by 2022/2023. A number of engineering contractors will be appointed onto three key frameworks; power supply, civil works and permanent way works. Firms will also be selected to assist with developing detailed designs ahead of any awarded construction contracts.
Formal invitations to tender will be issued in June of 2017.
