Transport for Wales launches £5bn bid process to build the South Wales Metro project

Jan 01, 1970

Metro The Welsh Government’s new transport body, Transport for Wales, is now seeking bids to design and construct the key phase of the South Wales Metro transport project, starting with electrification of the core Valley Lines. The procurement process also leaves room for the next phases of the Metro over the next 10 to 15 years across the core Valley Lines network and beyond; including new lines and stations. The lucrative public sector contract, which is the biggest ever seen in Wales, will also appoint a supplier to run the Wales and Borders rail franchise from October 2018. The successful supplier will receive an annual Welsh Government subsidy to run the rail franchise, currently operated by Arriva Trains Wales. The successful bidder is expected to be announced in late 2017. The deadline for submissions has been extended to September 16th. You can access the franchise tender here and the ECI Design and Construction PIN notice here. Find the article here.
